<br><br />yes, obviously the fires have made headlines all around the world.
<br><br />
<br><br />Lots of the fires are not out yet, and depending how far into the forest they are, they will not be put out till there is a good rain as they become too big and the terrain too rough.
<br><br />
<br><br />The weather is much milder in the last couple of days, so a lot of the fires, while still burning, are not travelling very fast and therefore back burning can be done, water bombing and people can leave the area if in danger.
<br><br />
<br><br />The fires are not far from Melbourne, some of the areas were outer suburbs, but we can't see them though on Saturday we had dust and smoke from them.
<br><br />
<br><br />The trouble with last Saturday was that the bush was extremely dry, due to ongoing drought, mixed with high temperatures and strong dry winds, made for an explosive mix.
<br><br />
<br><br />Basically when these conditions happen, the fires create their own weather conditions due to the heat they create. The wind can be much stronger around them, due to temperature differences, and the front fireline actually jumps itself as the trees catch on fire from the extreme heat before the actual fire front arrives. Thus, you literally get a fire that keeps jumping/exploding ahead of itself.

<br><br />You add to this a mountainous terrain, then, by the time you see the fire it is too late to run away as it is onto you. Many people died this way when they realised that they were not going to be able to fight the fire and save their houses, and tried to run away in cars etc....
<br><br />
<br><br />There are at least 200 people that have died. Part of the reason that so many have died is that more people live in the forests as it is nice - at least most of the time........
<br><br />
<br><br />This is not the first time that major fires have killed people, but it is the worst, and there will be a major enquiry about this. Who knows, maybe in the future all houses in the forests will need to have fire shelters.
<br><br />
<br><br />The floods in the north of Australia are part of the yearly moonsoons and are actually partly related to our extreme heat - the high pressure systems that bring hot winds to us curls around to bring rain to the northern parts..........
<br><br />
<br><br />I was on my bicycle for about 15 minutes Sat afternoon when it was 46C and pedalling against the wind. Not easy, drank half a litre in that time and I was still thirsty when I got home........
