This is to inform you of the barbaric and brutal act done against our bishop, the Most Rev. Alberto Ramento, former Supreme Bishop of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI). He was our bishop while i was then the IFI Women's Program Coordinator in1996. He was a warm-loving father to us although we often had some arguments on some women's issues and concerns which is common among church male-dominated heirarchy.

The cold-blooded killing of Aglipayan Bishop Alberto Ramento has angered not only us members of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI). His death also angered his fellow bishops from the Roman Catholic hierarchy, the Christian denominations members of the Ecumenical Bishops Forums (EBF) of whom he was a Co-chairperson, the National Council of Churches in the Philippines, of whom he was the former Chairperson, the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, the United Methodist Church , and the Episcopal Church in the Philippines. They have criticize the Arroyo administration’s for “lack of political will” in the face of extra-judicial killings in the country. They are gravely concerned of the government’s lack of political will to put a stop to these killings which now include Bishop Ramento. Other church and sectoral groups and  organizations also issued strongly worded statements among them are Peace for Life, the Promotion of Church People's Rights, and the Ecum!

 encial Women's forum. They believe and were convince that there was more to the killing of Bp. Ramento than plain homicide. Police said two men stabbed him dead at his church rectory of the San Sebastian parish in Tarlac last Tuesday, October 3.  

We are outraged by the violent manner by which our esteemed bishop was killed. Our bishop was brutally stabbed seven times to death at around 4 am in his room within the church. It was an assault that cannot be dismissed merely as another case of robbery and homicide as the police reported. Besides being a bishop who was neither extravagant nor ostentatious in his lifestyle, Bp.Ramento was a vocal defender of civil liberties and critic of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. We hailed him for his courage in denouncing  and  bravely declaring that the state bears responsibility for the unceasing political killings.”  He openly says that "to amend the Constitution was a brazen attempt for political survival rather than the interest of the people if not a covert action to open the floodgates for foreign exploitation of our natural resources.” He also believes that the scandals rocking the government of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has eroded all moral ascendancy in her!

  regime.The systematic attempts to suppress the truth behind the elections, corruption in high places, and schemes to wipe out all legitimate opposition to her regime in the name of defending the state, are contemptuous of a government who claims adherence to transparency and democracy. 

“The killing of Bishop Ramento is the dawn of a new resolve to fight for justice and peace,” the EBF said. The death of Bp. Ramento is a great loss to the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, to the ecumenical movements and to the Filipino people's struggle for a just, democratic and humane society. We grieved his death but we also celebrate his life of fullness for the service of his church and people. They may have taken his life to silence him, but his death will become the floodgates for which his spirit will flow to be be shared by many. It will definitely let a thousand flowers bloom....
