I am writing to inform you that a Research Conference on Neoliberal
Labor Market Restructuring and Capital Flexibility will be held on
Dec. 8-9, 2006 in the Philippines.

The conference aims to bring together workers organizations, trade
unions, civil society organizations and researchers from the South
and North to:
* share their research on the trends and impact of neoliberal
labor market reforms on workers and other social sectors in their
respective countries or regions
* identify issues and areas for further research and cooperation
among the participating organizations
* map out a common platform for policy advocacy with the aim of
strengthening workers rights and promoting workers organizing
The conference is being sponsored by the Ecumenical Institute for
Labor Education and Research (EILER), Asia Pacific Research Network
(APRN) and ARENA-New Zealand. It will come prior to the Dec 14-16
ASEAN Leaders Summit Meeting in the Philippines.

The APWSL Philippines proposes that the APWSL co-sponsor the said
conference as this is one of the major issues of trade unions in the
region. We can also use this activity as an opportunity to introduce
the APWSL to other regional networks and establish additional
contacts and expand our membership.

As co-sponsor, we are being asked to help in the fundraising for the
said conference and to mobilize people to attend the event. We will
also be part of the Conference Secretariat.

We had initial with the involved organizations about
this possibility and so far, they expressed no problem with the
idea. Do you think this idea is good and that we must go ahead with
this? I will send you the concept paper immediately. I just can't
find it in my files right now.

As it is only about few months to go, our decision is immediately
needed. The public announcement and invitation to the conference
will be released early next week.

If we co-sponsor this event, perhaps we can use this opportunity to
have another APWSL meeting. I have earlier sent you an email about
our proposal to hold the sub-regional coordinators meeting in the
Philippines on December. This idea is one of the several proposals
that came up during the consultation of several APWSL representatives
who attended the KMU International Solidarity Affairs (ISA) last
May. As I've told you, we were thinking it is a good opportunity
since the ASEAN Leaders Summit will be held in the country around the
same dates. However, Rev. Jang also came up with an invitation to
host the sub-regional conference and we fully respect this. So
perhaps, if APWSL can co-sponsor the Labor Conference, we can still
do a separate meeting here. What do you think?

Your quick reply would be very much appreciated. Thank you and hope
everything's well with you.

On behalf of APWSL-Philippines,
Tess Dioquino
