Hi everyone,

<br>First, thank you all for the work you've put into organizing this so far

<br>and especially Dongwon, for your efforts to bring together the various

<br>media activist organizations and networks who will be coming together

during this historic mobilization.

<br>

<br>I'm going to post some thoughts and questions in response to Dongwon's

<br>email. I know that you probably have thought of all these things

<br>already, but i will post them anyway, so please feel free to just tell

me it's all dealt with. Here goes.

<br>

1. The space, security, access, backup.

<br>

<br>- Space. a lot of other organizations and networks of media activists

<br>(free speech radio and tv, indymedia, etc.) will be sending people to

<br>HK. It sounds like the shared space you have might be tight, and also

<br>security is always an issue, as well as just the 'problem' of lots and

<br>lots of people showing up to share footage, photos, audio etc. What is

<br>your plan to deal with this? For example,

<br>

- Public/Secret. Is the location of the space going to be public, secret?

<br>

<br>- Access. Who will have access, and how will you keep track? For example

<br>in Cancún WTO as in other actions we made laminated press passes for

<br>40-50 people who had done trainings together and were allowed to use the

<br>space. Additional people who arrived later could get a pass if someone

who already had a pass would vouch for them.

<br>

<br>- Backup. At a certain point the limits of any space are often

<br>overwhelmed in the context of the international mobilizations. Is there

<br>a backup space(s) with internet connectivity, in case the main space is

<br>shut down by police, too many people arrive, the power or internet goes

out, etc.?

<br>

<br>

<br>2. Intake

<br>

<br>- Intake system. Obviously not everyone needs to come into the

editing/uploading space in order to contribute to the people's coverage.

<br>Do you have an Intake system set up? For example, during NYC Republican

<br>Convention, and in Miami, there was a secure space with access limited

<br>to 'trusted' people. However, it was possible for any person to drop off

<br>videotapes to contribute to the common pool of footage. There were

<br>designated places for people to come turn in tapes. When they turn in a

<br>tape, they can quickly fill out an intake form with information about

<br>what is on the tape, key footage, their contact information, etc [The

<br>form has a unique number (on a sticker) that the shooter takes with

<br>them, and it is immediately put on the tape, as well as on any copies of

<br>the tape]. If the tape is legally important material (police violence),

<br>then it is taken immediately to be copied (it can be logged while making

the copy), and the copy is removed to a secure location.

<br>

<br>- Flyer. For this system to work well, of course people who are not

<br>already part of the core media activist organizations need to know it

<br>exists. So, it's necessary to make a small flyer that explains to

<br>people how to plug in to the people's media infrastructure, to hand out

<br>during the mobilizations. For example the flyer can include the websites

<br>with open publishing ability; the phone number / skype ID where people

<br>can call in live to the radio station; a map with the physical location

<br>of the media center (if there is a public location) or even the

<br>locations of internet cafes that will be open during the mobilization;

<br>or if there is no public location for the media center, a drop off point

<br>where people can bring video tapes for Intake. There needs to be a

<br>physical version of the flyer but it should also be sent out via email

and to mobiles, an SMS version, etc.

<br>

<br>

<br>3. Relationship to Corporate Media

<br>

<br>- In our experience, the international mass media will be arriving to

<br>your space like a cloud of flies, especially if it is a public location

<br>and especially since it is together with HKPA. They can be very

<br>aggressive, making demands to physically enter the space, for example,

<br>as well as trying to purchase footage from you. It's necessary to have a

<br>strategy to deal with them, which is also a political decision (for

<br>example, will there be designated spokespeople whose job it is to repeat

<br>talking points to the corporate press? will you sell them footage under

<br>any conditions? what conditions? what about only under the condition

<br>that they include a visual bug (logo) and web URL over the footage?)

<br>Also, do you have people who have agreed to record the broadcasts of the

<br>mass media during the mobilization? This always provides plenty of great

<br>material to cut up later and illustrate how vicious their propaganda

machine is.

<br>

<br>Now, response to questions:

<br>

<br>> - we'd like to collaborate and cooperate each other. just let me know

> what you are planing?

<br>

<br>

<br>I know that freespeech radio news and free speech tv are sending audio

<br>and video teams, are you in touch w/them? From Indymedia, I know that

<br>some people will be going, but as far as I know they do not have a

<br>coordinated plan. Right now people are probably just planning to post

<br>news back to their local IMC, and also they will be looking to see what

they can plug into in HK.

<br>

<br>> - I am also searching for wide-distribution channels like

<br>> www.Indymedia.org or Democracy Now! as well as korean websites. How you

<br>> think, sasha?

<br>

<br>

<br>Democracy Now will cover the mobilizations, I don't know whether they

<br>are sending a team or whether they are relying on shared footage and

<br>audio from other organizations and networks. As for Indymedia, as I said

<br>currently there is no real coordination that I know of, however there

<br>are several things happening:

<br>

<br>- people will be posting back to local IMCs;

<br>

<br>- there will be people (including me, working from Hanoi) gathering

<br>links to post feature stories to global (www.indymedia.org) and to

<br>translate summaries to many languages;

<br>

<br>- if you want to, you can post video material to

<br>http://video.indymedia.org. Video posted there will be hosted at

archive.org which is very stable servers.

<br>

> Is there any possiblity for HK indymedia website?

<br>

<br>

<br>This is a possibility. It would not be a 'true' IMC unless there was a

<br>local collective that followed the process of new IMC creation; this

<br>often happens after major mobilizations. What we could do, if you want,

<br>is set up an unofficial HK Indymedia using one of the indymedia CMS,

<br>then use it as a place to publish a lot of material; if it turns out to

<br>be useful and especially if local (HK) activists decide to make an IMC

<br>collective and follow new-IMC process, it could later become part of the

indymedia network.

<br>

<br>It would require a decision to set it up, a decision about the server to

<br>host it, and a minimum group of people who would be the editorial

<br>collective during the mobilization. I think it could be great, but also

<br>I think you should consider whether we should make an IMC or encourage

<br>people to use http://gomediaction.net/ to publish their material. I

<br>don't know the answer, that should come from your analysis and the HK

activists analysis.

<br>

<br>> - And can i be included in some meeting or online discussion by media

> activists, if there is already any?

<br>

<br>

- First, is there an email list that can replace this cc list?

<br>

<br>- starting now, during the mobilizations, indymedia activists from

<br>around the world will be using irc.indymedia.org to exchange breaking

<br>news and links. I would suggest logging on to irc.indymedia.org (you can

<br>use it from any web browser, or you can use any dedicated irc client,

<br>for example Irssix is a good secure irc client). We can just pick a

channel name to use, for example #hongkong_wto (or whatever you want).

<br>The chat system has always been a little-discussed but really important

part of the breaking news coverage of mobilizations by IMC.

<br>

<br>- you might also want to create a Skype ID that is just dedicated to WTO

<br>mobilization. Then, stay logged into it and it can be another conference

<br>call/chat channel. This can also be used for live calls in to the radio

stream.

<br>

<br>- I think you might want to make an online meeting time for this week,

<br>either using the skype account or irc.indymedia.org or whatever you

want, and send out an announcement about it.

<br>

<br>- Consider sending out an email that clearly describes the concrete

<br>steps for independent media activists to participate, as soon as

possible, so that it can be translated into many languages.

<br>
