I want to extend my warmest congratulations and thanks to Gwynneth for accepting the position of convenor. I know APWSL will benefit greatly from her experience. Thank you also for being so proactive and generous in offering to sponsor a meeting cum training programme for Parat. I think that it is an excellent idea. I would be happy (subject to approval from TIE Asia board members) to come to Melbourne in October. We will stay in touch about this.

I am writing to you to say that Karen Moran's report on Tie-Asia meeting and APWSL Council were discussed at the last AAWL Executive on 28 June, and we have reached a number of decisions that we hope will be helpful for APWSL and all our comrades in the region supporting solidarity among genuine trade unions and worker activist groups.

<br> 

We thank Tie-Asia for having supported APWSL with funds and with invitations to the important Genuine Unionism discussion. We see this event as very significant in strenghtening the cooperation among different networks in the region.

<br> 

We congratulate Parat Nanakorn and Rev Jang Chang Weon for their election to APWSL Secretariat and we thank all APWSL member groups for having elected AAWL to a Convenor position, subject to the endorsement of AAWL Executive.

<br> 

<br>AAWL is pleased to accept the position. Gwynnyth Evans has been appointed to the position of APWSL Convenor, with the understanding that AAWL will train another AAWL member in issues relating to genuine unionism in the Asia Pacific region, who will be expected to take the position of APWSL Convenor in March 2006. 

<br> 

Gwynnyth is an experienced unionist and activist who has been on AAWL executive for a number of years. She is National Occupational Health & Safety Officer for the Australasian Meat Industry Employees Union (AMIEU) and she is Coordinator of the AAWL Regional Health & Safety Project.

The intention of training another member to take up the position is in recognition that APWSL needs to develop and we wish to involve and train some of our new members in this process rather than constantly rely on experienced but very busy activists with many additional positions.

<br>We discussed the financial and organisational situation of APWSL and we accepted that we should again support APWSL financially, even though we have very limited funds and a limit on our ability to fundraise. 

<br> 

We consider that it will be crucial for the APWSL Secretariat to meet soon, and that this meeting should involve facilitating as much solidarity activities as possible, and develop the network as much as possible.

<br>We therefore make this proposal:

We invite the APWSL Secretariat to meet in Melbourne this year, perhaps in October, if this time suits everyone.

<br> 

We would like to invite the Tie-Asia Coordinator Irene Xavier to participate in this meeting to continue the relationship that has been established in Kuala Lumpur and has been developing with the campaign in support of Nepalese workers.

<br> 

<br>We intend to pay for the travel costs for the Coordinator Parat Nanakorn, as well as all accommodation and all other costs during her stay in Australia. We would consider this our contribuition to APWSL for this year. 

<br> 

<br>We would like to propose that in addition to participating in the APWSL Secretariat meeting, Parat could participate in a number of solidarity meetings and events with Australian unions. 

<br> 

If Parat welcomes it, we would also support her participation in training sessions with Australian unions and AAWL Coordinators, as this has been requested and very well regarded by comrades in the region in the past. This training could include participation in regular union training as well as specialised training in Body Mapping workshops, financial administration, organisational applications such as databases, and communication systems such as broadcast emails.

We would propose a program for Parat lasting ten days to two weeks.

As our funds are very limited we would ask that APWSL Korea and Tie-Asia should fund the airfares for Rev Jang and Irene. We would cover all accommodation and other costs during their stay in Australia.

If acceptable we would like to develop a program for Rev Jang and Irene that includes a visit to another Australian city, probably Sydney or Brisbane, and participation in a program of solidarity visits with unions and activist groups, including refugee activists, Indigenous activists, Korean and Malaysian community activists and a visit to a detention centre.

We would propose a program for Rev Jang and Irene lasting four to eight days.

We hope that our proposals are acceptable to you. We consider that this would be helpful to the development of APWSL and in continuing the relationship with Tie-Asia. However we are very happy to discuss alternative proposals different from ours, or to make changes to our proposals if required.
