East Japan Earthquake, nuclear power plant disaster, and workers’ unity.
For all member of APWSL in each country.
I wish to express my gratitude for messages of encouragement and unity to
APWSL Japan about the earthquake on March 11.
East Japan, damaged area is supplying area of not only food, electric power,
but also manpower to the metropolitan area that centers on Tokyo.
There were labor union members and an activists among a lot of residents
struck at the earthquake. It is said that a lot of families of the workers
from East Japan working at the metropolitan area were struck. The support
service to the stricken area including such workers is being promoted in the
metropolitan area. It is necessary to demonstrate the worker's unity and
support particularly at time like this.
In the support activities on which all labor union in Tokyo are promoting,
the track fully loaded with goods sent from the whole country were promptly
sent to the damaged area. It is done continuously still now.
Labor movement magazine "Labor information" started support donation
activity together with providing information of damaged area, and the first
portion was sent through "Tohoku labor union unity". APWSL Japan is also
introducing articles on overseas media.
There is a group, which has been warning of danger of nuclear power
generation for many years, and continued the movement, theory establishment,
and document introducing. It is "Dandelion House( Tampopo sha )" of Tokyo.
Volume and quality of information sent out from there far surpass those of
the report by mass media, needless to say of the announcement by the
government and by Tokyo Electric Power Company.
We introduced three support activities above.
Even though it is not systematical, continuance yet now, rescue fund, goods,
and messages are being sent from this Aichi Prefecture by individuals or
small groups through these groups.
And, auto manufacturers such as Toyota, Nissan, and Honda and a lot of parts
suppliers also suffered from big shock and their factories are still
stopping or decreasing production. It has brought a severer situation to not
only the regular workers but also the non-regular workers.
So, ATU Chairman Mr. Wakatsuki proposed the following contents to Mr. Akio
Toyoda, president of Toyota Motor.
Toyota Motor and the group companies
(1) must guarantee constant works to the subcontract companies, and
compensate for the decrease.
(2) do not do regular worker's dismissal and not to stop renewal of
non-regular worker's employment.
(3) do not allow the subcontract enterprise to dismiss the worker. Toyota
must guarantee payment for them.
(4) do not deteriorate the working condition of workers of the companies.
With these demands, ATU declared struggle against Toyota to achieve the
above-mentioned demand uniting with the union in the region where a regular
and non-regular worker of a small and medium-sized small business were
organized.
We think that such a difficult situation will continue long, and the road to
the reproduction should not be only to the situation before the earthquake.
We should not pursue economic growth wholly-devoted of richness. It is
necessary to review the energy policy of relying on nuclear power
generation.
We noticed again the importance of bonds with the neighbor countries,
neighbors, and working people with each other.
I think that it is necessary to make new value and social images on such
bases, and the discussion about the way of new Japan will starts.
The issue changed a usual editorial policy considering the earthquake now.
