IMF affiliates demonstrate at Japanese embassies
Seventy one affiliates from more than 44 countries participate in the of
the September 12 Day of ACTION
GLOBAL: Affiliates from the International Metalworkers’ Federation from
Bangkok to Sydney to Dhaka to Brussels and Mumbai, among others, held
meetings with Japanese Ambassadors and embassy staff to discuss the
situation at Toyota Philippines.
Elsewhere, IMF affiliates launched mass demonstrations in front of
Japanese embassies and consulates, including:
・INMF members in Chennai who caught the attention of local television
station
・Indonesian affiliate LOMENIK-SBSI demonstrate in front of the embassy
in Jakarta
・170 AMWU members rallied outside the Japanese embassy in Melbourne and
handed over a petition. AMWU members and leadership also demonstrated in
Adelaide, Hobart, Perth and Sydney.
・Belgium affiliates were out in force in Brussels on September 12 and
met with second-secretary to the Ambassador to deliver a petition with
over 1,000 names opposing Toyota Philippine’s disregard for union
rights.
・In Valenciennes, French affiliate the CFTC demonstrated in front of
Toyota France and sent a letter to the Japanese Ambassador in France
・Romanian affiliate, METAROM, held a picket in front of the Japanese
embassy in solidarity of Toyota Philippines workers. The action captured
the attention of the media, appearing in several daily newspapers.
・400 NUMSA members demonstrated in front of the embassy in Johannesburg
and delivered a petition to the Japanese Ambassador.
Other affiliates delivered letters of protest to their respective
Japanese embassies and consulates.
The IMF will continue to work with affiliates to keep pressure on the
Toyota Motor Corporation in an effort to bring a just and fair
resolution to the situation at Toyota Philippines and for the members of
the Toyota Motor Philippine Corporation Workers’ Association (TMPCWA).

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation, the target of a global campaign,
is refusing to reinstate 136 illegally dismissed workers, despite
Supreme Court and International Labour Organisation (ILO) rulings in the
workers’ favour.
