I am not at my home to clear my emails regularly at present . I am looking after neices, nephew and animals for my brother. I am also having great difficulty breaking in some orthotics so that I can continue to be a postie. It will all come right soon, I hope.
I am supposed to be writing an introduction of myself and emailing everyone in APWSL.
Sorry about the delay. I am not sure how to go about this.
Really, it is a bit of a surprise that I have the role of a subregional co-ordinator with my total lack of experience in such things, except on a worksite level with my union position.
For a long time I have been looking for training of some sort.
I am off to a one day workshop that the NZCTU is putting on regarding 'Women in the Workplace' this month , which is a small start.
I have no problem with confidence as my role as a delegate ,or confronting the ignoramuses we work for, or connecting with fellow workers.
I do not have great opinions on how the world should be run, and prefer to believe that given the right conditions, people (with good guidance and education available at all times) will choose to do whats best for others, without doing the wrong thing for themselves.
I do know that no-one wants to be on the bottom of the social heap, and that if stuck in that place without help of the right kind, that the unaddressed grief this causes will make human expression go awry.
Greed on any level is a denial of the rights of others, and we don't have to go to the fascist extremists to see it.
All of us, with courage can find evidence of it inside our psyches, the difference being what we choose to do about it. I think it starts with recognising it in ourselves in the first place.
I can see denial in people with seemingly altruistic ideals.
Instead of recognising it in ourselves and exploring the options of transforming it , we can choose to see it as, for example, the uneducated working peoples problem, and easily deny it as a problem to work out on a personal level.
I don't know of a university degree that necessarily addresses these things, but of course this sort of work can be done. I believe that people can sense it when they meet people that are doing this kind of work. I also believe that doing this sort of work on ourselves leads to the right action at the time it's needed.
I am commited to this kind of personal development.
I do not want to support my own life at the expense of others hardship, yet find myself surrounded by sweat shop products giving me the illusion of being 'better off' than a lot of people. I can afford to eat and pay rent, and am nearly out of debt from my trip overseas where I met APWSL members, who I'm happy to have met.
Apart from this my experience is having been independant and working since I was 15 yrs old. I am now 44 yrs old, and have worked as a postie at three different times in my life adding up to 15yrs working for NZPost. I am the branch delegate for the Postal Workers Association, and a member on our executive.
I am in for the long haul in the struggle against an increasingly oppressive regime globally, nationally and locally.
Regards to all
Carol Bridgens, APWSL Aotearoa/New Zealand
